Remote
sensing is the technique of obtaining information about
objects through the analysis of data collected by special
instruments that are not in physical contact with the object
of interest (Avery and Berlin
1985). Imagery includes pictures or referencing maps from
mechanical scanners, aerial cameras, side looking airborne
radar, and satellites. Karl-Erik Christensen has a nice
Introduction
to Earth Observation and Remote Sensing online.

You
will find that not everything works for every data layer
in these listings. Our efforts at documenting, indexing,
and distributing data are a work in progress. Although we
cannot currently provide all the information you need to
locate all data on this server, we will try to provide as
much as possible at any given stage of a project.

The
availability of the buttons on this page is a function
of
|
| 1.
The state of completion of documentation and data packaging
for any given layer. The Catalog and the Clearinghouse
will probably never be complete, but as we finish documentation
for existing data sets, and for those that result from
ongoing research projects we will add as much information
to these pages as we can at various stages. |
| 2.
Our ability to distribute the data or the documentation.
CAST does not 'own' all the data sets that reside in
our warehouse. However we want to provide as much information
to the public about these data sets as we can. |
