As a Geomatics Specialist at CAST since 2005, Adam contributes to a variety of projects and provides technical support for the use of specialized software and field equipment at the Center. 

Barnes supports a wide range of research projects, involving aspects of:
- Remote sensing, including hyperspectral data collection and processing
- Close-range photogrammetry, including a wide range of sensors and scales
- 3D scanning, including terrestrial (site/structure) and close-range (object)
- Aerial photogrammetry, including low-altitude UAS fligh planning and processing 
- GIS analysis and tool development
- Object-based image analysis and classifcation
- High precision GNSS survey
- Instruction/outreach of geospatial technologies to students of all levels, including most notably the EAST Initiative
