Wolfgang is an anthropological archaeologist whose research seeks to understand urban and rural social transformations on the Swahili Coast of East Africa. As an NSF postdoctoral fellow at CAST, he is using systematic archaeological field surveys, ceramic analysis, spatial statistics, and satellite remote sensing to investigate settlement dynamics in the hinterland of Zanzibar Stone Town, a large urban center on Unguja Island in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

His position at the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies  has been funded by an award from the National Science Foundation Award No. 2204149
